When I started preparing for teaching this Memoir Writing class with the folks at Sage Living, I had a very naive idea of what to expect. I knew I would meet a variety of people who would likely have different capabilities for writing, and I knew I loved working with people older than me and with children. But what I wasn't prepared for was the joy I have experienced every single week, the excited anticipation of going to teach the classes, the connections and new friends I have made, and oh my, the stories that have risen from these folks when we do writing exercises are fascinating. I feel as if I have traveled all over the world through their experiences.
Memoir writing for seniors is so important. Not only does it give folks the opportunity to tell their stories and be heard, but it encourages them to reflect on their experiences which provides an opportunity for them to make sense of their past; it helps with mental agility; let's them experience their accomplishments again; and during the classes they are able to connect with other people in a way they may not have without the setting of sharing. Additionally, it allows them the opportunity to leave something for future generations other than their assets, something that will let people years in the future know something about their lives.
As I have mentioned several times, this has been one of the most meaningful experiences I have had in many years and while I hope the residents lives are fuller for it, I know mine is richer and I am truly grateful for that.
